Space may be endless, but Earth’s lower orbit is not - and it is getting crowded. Thousands of metric tons of space junk are flying around at high speeds, posing a threat to the many operational satellites orbiting our planet. Experts warn that, the more space debris accumulates, the greater the danger to our global digital infrastructure, which relies on said satellites.
However, innovative solutions aren’t lacking. Scientists at the Austrian Space Forum have developed a nanosatellite than can keep track of millions of individual pieces of debris – some only a single millimeter in size. This information could help avoid collisions.
