Bears of Durango explores the increasing conflict between humans and bears in Durango, Colorado, as the town grows and encroaches on bear habitats. Over the course of six years, researchers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife study bear behaviour and how urban development impacts the species. Researchers track and monitor over 600 bears, examining how human activities like trash dumping and food availability in urban areas affect bear behaviour. It also highlights the challenges of managing wildlife populations, especially when bears begin to rely on human-provided food sources. Through this research, the team aims to find ways for people and bears to coexist, promoting policies like bear-proof trash cans and better community practices.
