G.I. Jane survived only thanks to the kindness of nurse Erica Tagalicud and the veteran G.I. Joes, who left food for her. She lived in the desert (at the midpoint between Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada) since last winter until they finally learned about Hope For Paws and texted me for help.
I was told she shows up every day around 6 PM, eats, and disappears in the desert for another 24 hours. I wish I could have found her cave... I was so curious and quite amazed she survived this long - especially because there are so many rattlesnakes and coyotes in this area.
When I arrived after a long drive, I set up two traps and hoped I would get lucky with one of them.
She appeared out of nowhere and wouldn't get near my traps. I acted as if I was not really interested in her and just offered food as many of the other J.I. Joes did. I tried to lead her to the trap, but something spooked her in that area (where she had dinner the night before).
I brought the trap closer to her, set it up, walked away, and that did the trick!
I was already so tired from the drive there (after a long day of work), but there was no way for me to get her into a motel and sleep for the night - I couldn't get her out of the trap safely, so I powered through the drive back.
The process of working with her and teaching her to trust humans is so rewarding and special. Her first tail wag, first relaxed walk, and the discovery of the magic trick for her - DOGS!
I really hope to grow our organization, but for that, we need to be able to raise more funds. It's not about getting another rescuer, it's about being able to cover the medical cost for all these animals.
